Dumpy Decor to Chic Corkboard

I hope my friend doesn't read this, it's her Christmas gift.

Recently I found this dumpy-looking wall hanging at a thrift store for about $2.00.

I bought it, intending to cut out the fabric/embroidery and to paint/embellish this to be used as a base for a wine cork corkboard. Here's what it looked like when I finished:

After I used a seam ripper to tear out the fabric, I painted the whole thing with black gesso, then sanded a little to make it looked more distressed. I used an assortment of stickers, scrabble tiles, puzzle pieces, and yes, even a shotgun shell to spell the words "Vintage Vino." The papers are torn from an old dictionary and are the definitions for "drink" "vintage" "wine" and "wine glass." The pictures of the women (from artchicks.com) were black and white, I painted them with acrylic paint. There is a real metal key, some "edges" that were originally scrap book embellishments, and a cut-out of a phonograph. The tag in the middle at the bottom is an actual dog tag (canine, not military) that I flipped over and used metal "stamps" to say "wine." Then I used some random screws I found to put it on the board. I finished by filling it in with wine corks I collected at parties. I think Teri will love it, and won't even care that I got it at the thrift store! Yay for $2 handmade gifts!

Melted Record Bowls

So I hope no one that I plan to give one of these bowls to as a Christmas gift is reading this...

Here is a SUPER EASY way to re-use old vinyl records... I got records at a thrift store for a few bucks a stack.

Step one: Preheat the oven to 200 Degrees F

Step two: Put a tall tin can (I used a spaghetti sauce can) on a cookie sheet, and center a record over the can.

Step three: Bake for 3 minutes

Step four: Transfer the softened record into a large bowl (you can carefully use your hands, it's not TOO hot) and shape it as you like. It will harden fast, so be swift about it. If you don't like how it turns out, put it back on the can in the oven for a few minutes and try again.
